After a very public discussion on Saturday Night Live’s lack of black female comedians, executive producer Lorne Michaels conducted a quiet talent search to remedy the situation. The search has come to an end with spectacular results, as Deadline reports that Sasheer Zamata has been added to the cast!
Zamata will be the first black female on the cast since Maya Rudolph left five years ago, and will make her debut on the January 18th episode, with Drake as a musical guest. The comedian is fairly unknown to the mainstream, just four years out of college. She’s appeared on Totally Biased, Inside Amy Schumer and The Morning After, so she’s been vetted in front of a camera and been forced to deal with ensemble situations.
Personally, I’m really looking forward to her voice getting added to the writing staff. Not only is she a fresh face as a performer, she’s got some stuff to say – and she’s not afraid to get a little geeky. Here’s an example, a sketch she wrote (and appears in) for Upright Citizens Brigade:
I’m actually going to start watching Saturday Night Live again.
